Working with you



You stepped into the shelter, smiling as you tied your new apron around your waist. This was your first day as a volunteer at the animal shelter that was just outside your neighborhood. Your friend, Heracles, had mentioned that they needed more help on Saturdays. Since you had nothing to do on Saturday's and you were off work on that day, you decided to volunteer every couple of weeks or so. Not only could you help out around he shelter but in your free time you could socialize with Heracles since he also volunteered on Saturday. He mainly volunteered because he is a huge fan of cats. He loves cats to death, much like yourself.

You remembered when you had first met Heracles. You had lost your own cat and had placed flyers all over the city. Sure your missing feline had only been gone for three days total after the whole thing was over, but those were some stressful three days. Heracles had already found your cat and after seeing the flyer, came to your house to bring the cat back. You had been so grateful and afterwards you two had become great friends. However, just recently you had discovered that you had a crush on the man and you had accepted it willingly. Now you were trying to get the guy to like you back.

You walked up to the main desk and noticed Heracles had just gotten here himself. "Hey." You called as you approached him. He turned to look at you and waved. "Hey." He replied in a calm manner. "How are you doing?" You asked, Heracles leading the way to the cat room. "Pretty good. Are you doing alright?" He asked as he unlocked the door with the keys from behind the counter. "Yea." You answered, heading into the cat room with Heracles after he got the door unlocked. Most of them were sleeping and you laughed as the ones that were awake flocked over to Heracles to be petted and pampered. All of them were purring happily as they lovingly rubbed against his legs. You giggled as more awakened and came over to join the others. A few came to you and you bent down to pet them, occasionally scratching behind their ears.

"They need food and water." Heracles said, looking over at you and you nodded, standing back up and following him back out the door to the supply closet. "You have to make sure to grab the cat food and not the kitten food. I'll take care of the food. You can take the pitcher and fill it with water from the sink." He said as he picked up the bag of cat food from the shelf. You took the pitcher and walked over to the sink, turning the faucet on cold and letting it fill with cool water before taking it back into the room and pouring it into the water bowls.

Once again the cats were all over Heracles. He was laying on the bench as if sleeping while cats surrounded him. It was a rather comical yet adorable sight. One cat was laying on his chest while a couple others curled up around his head. Several were laying against his legs and another one slept with his head resting on his hand. Smiling, you quietly left and began to take care of the kittens in the next room over. After taking care of them you helped a couple other volunteers out with taking care of the dogs. The work went pretty fast and when you exited the dog filled room you noticed Heracles was back at the main desk. A kitten was sleeping on top of the desk as Heracles gently stroked its brown fur.

"I didn't even notice it was two already." You said as you joined him behind the desk. "The days around here go pretty quick." Heracles noted, his emerald eyes locked with yours. "Are you going to come back?" He asked. "Of course!" You replied enthusiastically. A smile formed on his lips. "I'm glad." You smiled as well, a pool of warmth started from your chest and spread throughout your body. You wanted to tell him so much that you liked him but the chance of rejection stopped you. Instead you held your tongue.

The rest of the day went just as fast as the beginning. You were surprised when it was time for dinner and Heracles told you it was time to leave. You untied your apron on your way outside and threw it into the backseat of your car. "_____, do you want to come over?" Heracles called from his car. "Sure." You replied, a faint blush dusting your cheeks lightly.

You stepped into your car and started it up before pulling out of the parking space and driving to Heracles' house. You both arrived roughly at the same time and you followed him inside the moderately sized home of his. "Do you want anything to drink?" He asked, walking into the kitchen. "Just water." You replied, noticing one of his cats, more specifically the black cat named Sophie, was rubbing against your legs. You bent down, stroking the soft black fur and smiled when you heard the delighted purr of the cat. "She likes you." Heracles said from the door way as he handed you your glass. "Yea, I guess so." You said, giggling a little as you took the glass of water from his hand. You followed Heracles into the living room and sat next to him on the sofa.

A silence hung over the room for a while. It wasn't awkward. Actually it was relaxing and calm, just like Heracles himself. You were enjoying this silence. Maybe it was because you never got to just relax or maybe it was because you were with Heracles. You weren't really sure, but you just knew that you liked to be here in silence with him. However, this sweet silence was broken by and even sweeter voice when the man sitting next to you called your name. "Yes?" You replied, emerald meeting (e/c). "I…" You weren't sure why, but for some reason he looked away from you and you noticed his face was a little red. Maybe he was running a bit of a fever? You placed your hand on his forehead and noticed that his body temperature was normal. "Well you don't have a fever… I wonder why your face is all red." At these words and at your actions, his face turned a deeper shade of crimson and you couldn't come to the conclusion as to why.

"That is because I was going to tell you that I…" He trailed off for a second time. You cocked an eyebrow. "That you what?" You asked, leaning a bit closer towards your friend. "That I like you." Heracles said, looking into your (e/c) orbs again. You froze. Your face was completely blank. He… "…like you too." You mumbled quietly. "What?" He asked. "I like you too." You said, blushing a bit at your words. A small smile placed itself on Heracles face and he leaned in towards you, closing the space between your lips. "Do you care?" He asked, his lips merely centimeters from your own. Your own reply was closing the space.

His lips were soft and you wondered if yours were this soft too. The kiss itself was soft and sweet and your head felt like it was spinning. Only did the lack of air separate the both of you and you felt as if you were dazed. "Heracles." You paused for a minute before continuing. "I love you." He pulled you down with him as he laid himself on the couch. "I love you too." He replied, kissing your forehead. The last thing you remember that night was Heracles arms wrapped around your waist, the soft sound of his heartbeat, and the words 'I love you' before the darkness pulled you into a peaceful slumber.
